Built for real cold
Red Deer's record low is −50.6 °C, set on December 17, 1924, and winters here are long, cold and very dry. A furnace in Central Alberta works for most of the year, so small faults such as a weak igniter, a dirty flame sensor or a clogged filter tend to show up on the coldest night, not the mildest. A fall check is the cheapest insurance; see maintenance and tune-ups.
Warm summers, cool nights
Summers on the aspen parkland are warm and often rainy, with cool nights, and the city has reached 37.2 °C on record. Many homes get by with fans until a heat wave arrives, then wish they had central air. A heat pump adds cooling and also takes over much of the spring and fall heating.

Common questions
Why does my furnace run but the house stays cold?
A plugged filter, blocked vent pipes, a failing igniter or a dirty flame sensor are common causes. Leaky ducts in a cold crawl space can also lose much of the heat before it reaches the rooms.
How long does a furnace swap take?
A straightforward replacement usually takes a day. New venting, duct changes or a basement that's hard to reach can add time.
Why is one zone cold when the rest are warm?
A stuck zone valve, a failed circulator pump, air in that loop or a thermostat fault are the usual causes.
Will a heat pump keep my house warm in January?
On its own, maybe not on the coldest days. Paired with a furnace or backup heat, it handles the milder days and the furnace handles the deep cold.
Is central air worth it in Red Deer?
Many homeowners find it is for heat waves and upstairs bedrooms, especially when a heat pump also covers spring and fall heating.
