Penhold is a town 16 km south of Red Deer where Highway 2A meets Highway 42, about 128 km north of Calgary and east of the Red Deer River.
What that means for your heating
Penhold grew quickly in the late 1970s, enough to become a town in 1981, so a good share of its homes date from that era. Furnaces in houses of that age have often been replaced once already, and ducts and insulation from the period can be the weak point. See ductwork and air quality.
Open country around town
Farmland surrounds Penhold, and homes on the edge of town face open fields with little shelter from winter wind. Drafty doors and windows on the windward side are worth sealing before the cold sets in. A door sweep and fresh caulking around window frames are an afternoon's work and pay off all winter.
A railway whistle stop
Penhold began as one of many whistle stops along the Canadian Pacific Railway, and research has found no earlier use of the name than the railway siding itself. It was incorporated as a village in 1904 and became a town in 1981 after a burst of growth. Homes from that growth spurt are now well over forty years old, which is the age when an old furnace deserves a plan before it fails.
