Blackfalds is a town on Highway 2A, 13.5 km north of Red Deer, between the city and Lacombe. Its post office name was first Waghorn, after postmaster Walter Waghorn, before the town took the name Blackfalds in 1903.
What that means for your heating
Much of Blackfalds is family housing built in recent decades, so many homes have mid-efficiency or high-efficiency forced-air furnaces now reaching their first major repairs. High-efficiency units vent through plastic pipes on a side wall, and keeping those clear of snow is the simplest fix you can do yourself. See furnace repair.
Newer homes and tight builds
Newer houses are often built tight to save energy, which keeps heat in but can trap moisture and stale air. If windows fog up in winter or rooms feel stuffy, ask about ventilation and humidity settings rather than more heat.
Named for a Scottish hamlet
When the settlement changed its name from Waghorn in 1903, it borrowed Blackfalds from a hamlet in Scotland. The town has grown from a small stop on the highway between Red Deer and Lacombe into a commuter community for both cities. Commuters who are away all day can use a programmable or smart thermostat to warm the house just before they get home instead of heating an empty house.
