Furnace Repair in Red Deer, AB

When the furnace stops in a Central Alberta winter, the house cools quickly. A few checks can rule out the simple causes while you wait for a technician.

First checks

Confirm the thermostat is on heat and set above the room temperature, and that its batteries are fresh. Look for a tripped breaker, and make sure the switch on or near the furnace, which looks like a light switch, is on.

A plugged filter

Filters clog faster in winter, when the fan runs for hours a day. A filter thick with dust can starve the furnace of air until a safety limit shuts the burners off. Replace it and give the furnace a few minutes to restart.

Frost on the vent pipes

High-efficiency furnaces breathe through two plastic pipes on an outside wall. Drifting snow or frost can block them during a deep cold spell, and the furnace stops to protect itself. Clear the snow gently by hand and keep the area open.

Lockout lights

Most modern furnaces show a blinking light through a small window. Count the blinks and match them to the chart inside the panel door. Repeated lockouts point to a fault, not bad luck, so note the code for the technician.

Warm-up or cold air

A short blast of cool air at start-up can be normal. Air that stays cold while the fan keeps running often means the burners have shut off, which can be a sensor, igniter or venting problem.

Safety first

If you smell gas, leave the house and contact the gas utility from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outdoors and dial 911.

Getting it fixed

Tell the technician the furnace's age, what it's doing and any code it shows. Send a request and an HVAC technician will get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my furnace run but the house stays cold?
A plugged filter, blocked vent pipes, a failing igniter or a dirty flame sensor are common causes. Leaky ducts in a cold crawl space can also lose much of the heat before it reaches the rooms.
Can I keep restarting a furnace that locks out?
One reset after clearing a vent or changing a filter is reasonable. If it keeps locking out, stop resetting it and book a repair, because the fault is still there.
